Men In Black 3

Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: Men in Black 3 is not nuanced, high-brow cinema. It's plagued by some of the same things as most big-budget popcorn flicks -- occasionally overdone special effects, the stray plot hole here or there, and a bit of predictability. But as long as you can put that aside, and frankly such things should be expected anyway, you'll find an extremely enjoyable and satisfyingly nostalgic movie.

The Men in Black series seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it affair, and chances are if you enjoyed either the classic first movie or the.. well.. less than classic second movie, you'll enjoy MiB3 as well. Will Smith returns to top comedy form as Agent J, Tommy Lee Jones is as enjoyably grumpy as ever in his role as Agent K, and Josh Brolin delivers a nearly-perfect performance as a younger K. Whether Will Smith is paired up with the world-weary Jones or the brash, charming Brolin, the on-screen dynamic is always enjoyable and often hilarious.

The occasionally wonky plot is buoyed by an interesting -- if slightly predictable -- story arc and strong acting on all parts. Overall the movie much more resembles the first movie than the second, and for those who grew up watching the original there's plenty of nostalgia to go around. By the time the resolution comes around, it makes for a very satisfying and surprisingly touching finish. Don't expect a Best Picture winner, but MiB3 has enough working for it to offer nearly everyone a highly enjoyable experience.

Get The Gringo

this was a great action packed over the top movie. for me, this would have been a part 2 to 'payback'. in this film he is a thief and he also narrates as the film goes on. mel starts the movie with a gr8 chase from the law that winds him in the toughest of situations. he must use his street smarts and his talents as his tools to survive. this was a straight to dvd film which feels more like a big screen blockbuster to me. evrything was well acted, lots of black humor and action. a great film for the old school mel gibson action fan. mel goes back to his roots and proves to us all that he still has it!!!

This film was great art, from any perspective. From the theme to the dialogue it was a great conception and a skillful writing. The directing, casting and venue/sets were spot on. A strong subject with strong acting. This will be a watch-again film for me.

Batman Begins

I've been avoiding much of Holleywood's latest productions due to so many predictable stories, politically-driven plots, and mediocre acting so I did not catch this one in theatres. I probably would not even have rented it if my son had not begged me to do so. I am sooooo glad now that I've seen it. I'm blown away... this is not only the best Batman movie out there but one of the top five best action/adventure movies I've ever seen!! I bought a copy through Amazon before even finishing the DVD.

Batman has always been one of my favorite superheros but one that has rarely been well captured on screen. He's basically a regular, more-or-less everyday guy who works out a lot and has some cool gadgets; sort of brooding James Bond in a mask and cape. This movie starts out by showing how he learned and perfected his martial arts skills. It really captures the soul of the Dark Knight. Christian Bale is a perfect choice to play this character. I can't say enough positive things about this approach, it's exactly how I have always pictured the character.

The pacing nears perfection, the action is gripping and extremely well choreographed, the acting is top rate, the writing is fantastic, and the cinematography is outstanding. Rarely is a known story done so originally and well. I love the depth of the characters, the splashes of humor, and the low-key but everpresent moral undertones. It's neither preachy nor over the top. And, despite the fact that we all have a pretty good idea of the plot it is surprisingly original. Oh, and it's got Liam Neesan with a sword too; what more could you want ;-)

I am also very impressed with how they show Gotham being very much like any large US city today yet demonstrate in a realistic and believable manner how a masked superhero and fantastic villians can fit in that context. I really hope this cast/crew/director hook-up again for a sequal as the calling card at the end perhaps suggests.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

First of all, The Dark Knight/Batman is not a super hero. He is very human who can do super hero feats. He gets hurt, and he feels real pain-physical and emotional.

Secondly, there is a love triangle-Bruce, Rachel and Harvey. Rachel is torn between her love for Bruce, her childhood sweetheart, who she knows is Batman, and Harvey who is every woman's White Knight who is fighting for truth and justice in the judicial halls of Gotham with danger and enemies on every side. Harvey is as pure as they come in true comic book lore.

Thirdly, every hero needs their personal entourage. Batman has Alfred and Lucius. Harvey has Rachel and Jim Gordon.

Fourthly, every hero needs a nemesis. The usual assortment of 30's type gangsters are for comic relief. The real nemesis, antagonist, for both Batman and Harvey Dent is the Joker, a psychotic rogue. The Joker's insanity is his genius, a pure sociopath who was abused by his father.

Fifthly, you have the citizens of Gotham who both Batman and Harvey are pledged to protect, even though, there are moments when you wonder why since truth and justice to the citizenry is great as long as they don't have to sacrifice themselves for it. This film shows human nature at its worst and its best.

Sixthly, the noble elements of morality, friendship, love, and sacrifice have their part in a saga which plays out in the lives projected on the screen before us. Like a Greek tragedy we are shocked and silently weep for the heroes as they march to their fate, predestined by the gods for their own amusements.

The Dark Knight is a dark, disturbing piece of film fiction. Children would find the images haunting their sub consciences for decades to come. It is an intense film which brings a number of motifs together in a cohesive script.

All great stories share elements of triumph and tragedy. A hero's personal lost can take many forms. Both Batman and Harvey react differently to their mutual lost.

The ideal hero is not always the hero presented to the public. One classic example of this is THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. Sometimes, the lie is more important than the truth.

In the end Batman makes an unalterable decision like Harvey Dent. Batman's ultimate sacrifice for Gotham City is a testament that sometimes a hero must become the villain for the greater good.

Jim Gordon becomes the bridge between the truth and the lie of these two true human heroes.

Lockout

Do not judge this movie off "reviews" that you read from others. Judge it off your own experience. As all movies should be. Give it a chance. I typically laugh when other people talk "shit" on a movie that they themselves do not like. This is not like any action movie. A guy (Guy Pierce) must save the pres. daughter from a prison in space that all dirt bags got loose on and now the prison is falling out of space.... epic. epic story line in deed.

I'll keep this short. I rather enjoyed this movie. The whole time watching it, I kept thinking," this is just like a Die Hard movie, only with Pearce playing the roll of Bruce Willis." The only thing I wasn't happy with was Maggie Grace's character, but I got over it pretty quick. This movie was alot of fun, and never boring. Pop the popcorn and grab a drink and enjoy.

Lockout is a non-stop thrillride that takes place in space! The action is just about as good as it gets and...
Okay, so this movie sucks. Hard. I just really want this review to be read on the How Did This Get Made Podcast. Hopefully this works!

This Means War

This is a romantic comedy combined with a spy thriller that continues to entertain with never a dull moment. The appeal of the story structure is part of the success since a beautiful woman in love with two men, trying to choose between them, is a never fail plot strategy. Having the two guys appeal to the audience as much as they appeal to the character played by Reese Witherspoon kept up the suspense. Male competition is also a great plot element and this film has the two fellows in competition while at the same time dependent on each other while serving as CIA agents.

Reese Witherspoon is excellent, as always, but during the film I realized how often she tilts her head when talking to a man, conveying almost constant seduction. One of the agents, played by Chris Pine is the playboy type and thus the viewer wonders whether Reese is the woman that can make this playboy settle down. He is contrasted with another CIA agent, played by Tom Hardy, a man with family instincts. Chelsea Handler plays Reese Witherspoon's best friend who offers terrible advice.

This is a good romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon in rare form. She is complimented by two male actors who are perfectly cast. The script is funny and action packed. It is good entertainment.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

I'm one of the guys who buys for 3d effects 1st-plot later.Every now and then a film offers the whole package,and this was one of them.Plenty of action on the island,giant insects,lizards,electric eels,birds,ect,all in real good 3d.The Rock is so good in this movie I was surprised that his acting skills and humor have really improved.Not a dull moment, this movie moves along quickly,is interesting and visual.I gave this movie 5 stars because I honestly couldn't find a reason not to.I would say this is a movie the whole family would enjoy.For 3d lovers this is a movie to add to your collection.

This movie is an adventure of imagination. The young boy bonds with his stepfather who is brilliant and fun and they go in search of a mystery island where his grandfather lives. The South Pacific is full of sights and smells that would rock anybody into a happy place. Fish that are magenta, purple pink and tropical blue are all on the dock. They hire a loopy young acting flyer and his daughter. He owns an adventure helicopter, rickety and old but it will be part of all the excitement they encounter. They find the shangrila island with big and small animals. The underwater world is breathtaking with masses of colors and plants. A mountain of gold stands out in the distance. The hiking thru the heart of the jungle holds more visual images that are full of what anybody creative would love to have. They are living out the Jules Verne book in a way but with there own special touches. There are whirlwind storms flying all around, sparkling lakes and streams filled with shiny plants and stones, green all over lush and beautiful, everything you would wish for on a secret island. There are bees that fly, the characters jump on their backs and zoom over the plankton and planet of abundance. There is a submarine they fire up with the help of an electrical eel. This movie is full of positive energy.

Act of Valor

I had the unique opportunity to see this film 2 years before it's commercial release due to some Navy Duty I was tending to. Before all of the computer & TV images, digital type on the screen during scene changes, music and all the other "Hollywood" stuff was added. It was basically an action-packed film about possible current-day events and incorporating some true events that real SEALs have faced. When the movie ended, I was in awe. I had the opportunity to meet "Mouse" McKoy and listen to how this story was developed and how the SEALs had direct input on the Operations & story portrayed.

Since that time, I had been looking forward to the release of this film to the big screen. I took my family to see it and all were impressed. I was doubly-impressed after viewing it with the added graphics & soundtrack, etc. I was even more impressed by the audience at the end of the movie. There was no cheering or hooting & hollering. Instead, it was as if each one of them held a reverence for the everyday sacrifices that the SEALs and other Military men & women make for our country.

Critics are critics. Of course they'll find something to fault with the movie, that's their job. It doesn't surprise me that they don't like the acting... cuz these guys were the real deal. I'll take a dozen SEALs over 1 actor ANY DAY. C'est Livre. This is a great movie1 20x better than the false "Navy SEALs" of 1990 era. THAT was terrible acting and a crap movie. God Bless the SEALs for being able to do what they do and their families that support and wait for them.

Safe House

"Safe House" is great! This is how the story goes: For the past year, Matt Weston has been frustrated by his inactive, backwater post in Cape Town. A "housekeeper" who aspires to be a full-fledged agent, the loyal company man has been waiting for an opportunity to prove himself. When the first and only occupant he's had proves to be the most dangerous man he's ever met, Weston readies for duty. Tobin Frost has eluded capture for almost a decade. One of the best ops men that the CIA's known, the ex-intelligence officer has given up assets and sold military intel to anyone with cash since he turned. From trading secrets to North Korea to aiding splinter cells, the damage he's done to the U.S. is immeasurable. And he's now back on the reservation with a secret. As soon as Frost is brought in for debriefing, mercenaries come and tear apart Weston's safe house. Barely escaping, the unlikely partners must discover if their attackers have been sent by terrorists or someone on the inside who will kill anyone standing in the way. Now it's up to Weston to figure out who he can trust before they're both eliminated from the game.

The cast led by Denzel Washington (who also executive produced) (as Tobin Frost) & Ryan Reynolds (as Matt Weston) is great. The directing by Daniel Espinosa is great. The story & screenplay by David Guggenheim is great.

The music by Ramin Djawadi is great. The cinematography by Oliver Wood is great. The film editing by Richard Pearson is great. The casting by Sarah Finn is great. The production design by Brigitte Broch is great. The art direction by Jonathan Hely-Hutchinson, Shira Hockman, Pablo Maestre Galli & Erik Polczwartek is great. The set decoration by Melinda Launspach, Andrew McCarthy & Tom Olive is great. The costume design by Susan Matheson is great.

This is a great action thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat with your heart racing and your mind thinking at the same time. Denzel Washington is great as usual in another memorable performance. This is another great film on Denzel's resume.

Wrath of the Titans

"Wrath Of The Titans" is pretty good. This is how the story goes: A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus - the demigod son of Zeus - is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares, switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda, Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor, and fallen god Hephaestus, Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

The cast led by Sam Worthington (as Perseus) is pretty good. The directing by Jonathan Liebesman is pretty good. The story by Dan Mazeau, David Johnson & Greg Berlanti & the screenplay by Mazeau & Johnson is pretty good.

The music by Javier Navarrete is great. The cinematography by Ben Davis is great. The film editing by Martin Walsh is great. The casting by Jina Jay is great. The production design by Charles Wood is great. The art direction by Thomas Brown, Ray Chan, Jordan Crockett, Stuart Kearns, Mike Stallion & Mark Swain is great. The set decoration by Lee Sandales is great. The costume design by Jany Temime is great. The special effects supervised by Neil Corbould is great. The make-up effects designed by Paul Engelen is great.

This is a pretty good sequel to "Clash Of The Titans" (2010). It is a little bit better than the first movie. This is an action-packed ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat with your mind thinking and your heart racing at the same time.

21 Jump Street

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum rule in this politically incorrect comedy that had me laughing out loud. Jonah Hill shouting at a suspect running away, "I'm going to shoot you if you don't slow down." They go undercover to find the drug dealers at a high school. Having been out of high school for 7 years they find it hard to adopt to 2012. Ice Cube was great as the stereotypical angry black police captain who tells people to embrace their stereotypes. Jake M. Johnson is the principle. His first words are "I am just one more gay black kid being punched in the face from a nervous break down." The drama teacher tells his students, "I remember being in upstate New York doing cocaine with Willie Nelson's horse..."

The great one liners are seemingly endless. Jonah Hill tries out for the role of Peter Pan while Channing's chemistry teacher comes on to him. The guys forgot who they were and end up with each other identities. Jonah Hill is in drama and a "track star" while meat head Tatum is in the AP classes. The cops are bumbling in their roles but manage to get the job done. There are some social issues mentioned in the movie in a comedic fashion. One is the difference on how people view a black kid who dies from drugs as from a white kid. Another is the commercialization of education. Highly recommended comedy.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

I loved the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories and I wound up loving the original Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes -- Sherlock was tougher, funnier and hilariously played by Robert Downey Junior. Unfortunately this sequel loses the entire point of a Sherlock Holmes story: he's supposed to use his idiosyncratically brilliant deductive powers to solve mind-bending mysteries. In this movie Sherlock is more of an action figure who fights all the time, pursues a sloppy plot of international intrigue blah blah blah, and never solves anything. It's pretty sad: it turns out that a Sherlock without a confounding murder mystery is just an irritating twit with a few mildly colorful sidekicks. In a word: avoid. See the BBC production instead, it's far more Sherlock.

The Grey

There were a lot of things that felt like they were kept secret on purpose before sitting down and viewing The Grey for the first time. The trailer hints at the movie being nothing more than a survival thriller starring Liam Neeson as he struggles to survive not only the unrelenting cold elements, but also the ferocious wolves that inhabit his surroundings. The Grey is written and directed by Joe Carnahan, the man who brought us Smokin' Aces and The A-Team. The movie is also produced by Tony and Ridley Scott, which you think the marketing campaign would jump all over but doesn't even mention. Not only that, but there is quite a bit more to the movie than the trailer and TV spots let on.

As the movie begins, Ottway (Liam Neeson) narrates a letter he's writing to his wife. This segment just made me realize what my life is lacking most right now and that's a Liam Neeson voiceover for every thought that crosses my mind. Think about that. It'd be the most amazing thing ever. The trailer reveals a few major things: that Ottway is stranded in the middle of nowhere in the blistering cold thanks to a plane crash and that wolves stand in the way of him actually surviving this ordeal. The plane crash itself is one of the best executed in recent memory. The way it's filmed and edited is downright ruthless. It's as if you're on the plane as it goes down. The Grey doesn't just place you in this blizzard-ridden hell infested with wolves, it kicks your teeth down your throat, laughs in your face, and throws you into it with everything it has.

The movie gives new meaning to some of the simplest things. Seeing your breath in cold weather takes on an entirely new definition and the way The Grey deals with death just feels incredibly powerful. Ottway questions faith right from the start and takes matters into his own hands throughout the movie. The events that transpire take a toll on even the most religious plane crash survivors. Death is more of a relief than something worth distancing yourself from. Ottway describes it as being a warm sensation and thinking about the thing you love most in life before completely giving yourself into it. Many of the campfire conversations are entirely more impactful than they have any right to be. The conversation about faith in general hits you like a potato sack full of cinder blocks.

The Grey manages to shout its message even when there's nothing being said on-screen. One of the images that stuck with me long after the movie ended was the shot of blood flowing into the paw print of a wolf in the snow. There's a scene by the river that strictly relies on sound and the way you succumb to it is nothing more than brilliant. There's another shot at the end of the film where (and I'm trying to avoid spoilers the best I can) Ottway is arranging some objects in the snow. The way Liam Neeson's fat, sausage-like fingers delicately wrap themselves around these objects and the way his hands tremble as he does this illustrates not only what this man has been through, but also that he's at the end of his rope. Plus the movie will make you want to look over your shoulder the next time you consider relieving yourself out in nature somewhere.

That level of greatness The Grey eventually achieves isn't around at all times. Some lame dialogue does squeak through and characters manage to do really stupid things at times (John Diaz, played by Frank Grillo, especially), but that seems to help the movie more than anything. People, real people, occasionally do stupid things especially when they're scared. So this kind of made the characters feel more genuine and made it very clear that certain characters were caving under pressure.

There was a movie that came out back in 2000 that was called Vertical Limit. It was one of my most trying times at the movie theater. I fought vehemently to leave about halfway through because I hated it so much, but I was with people at the time who wanted to stay until the end. It was probably one of the worst experiences I've ever had to pay for. The Grey is basically everything I wanted that movie to be. The cast is fantastic, their actions are mostly believable, and there's this meaning to everything that really speaks to you.

The Grey is a grainy thriller that knocks the wind out of you on more than one occasion. In fact, it's rare that the movie actually allows you to catch your breath. Everything is such a raw, vicious, and brutal test of faith. It's fantastically violent and Liam Neeson is superb. If The Grey is anything to fall back on, then 2012 is going to be one hell of a year for movies.

Haywire

I love action movies so its hard to rate this movie because I love Gina's action scenes and really hope to see her in more movies. I also loved the supporting cast in this movie as well. So why do I have a problem. First fire the guy who picked the music for this movie. The music sucks balls omg did a proper lady like my self say that. Yes I did because that is how much I disliked the music that I risked my proper lady like self to write something my boy friend would say. You don't take an action movie and add weird creepy 70's music to it.

They took a potentially good movie and some how messed it up. First you don't know why anything is happening so instead of getting intrigue somehow you get confused which causes the movie to get boring it does not keep you engaged(plus your mind is trying to escape the weird music so you fall asleep lol) Since, you dont know what the heck happens or why as if some how the purpose got lost somewhere. You don't get engaged like you do with Bourne identity. I only mention that because while you dont know what happens in that movie in the beginning your engaged because the character has purpose he needs to find out who he is. with this movie you don't get to know who your protagonist is and so the movie gets lost somehow.

The fight scenes were nailed an awesome really done well and Gina is likable. Something went wrong in this movie and I hope they correct it because would love to see Gina come back with her in the lead or even a second but this time well done hay wire 2 this time get the director of the Avengers(Joss Whedon) he understands what we need when it comes to action Hero's. Gina ask Joss Whedon to Direct your next move you wont be disappointed and your stardom will be Born.

However, as an action Hero lover I still saw this movie for a second time just because I love me some Gina kickass action even if I had to endure some sleepy time. Please please Joss save Gina and Direct one of her next movies as long as your the writer Joss you can help her. I rated the movie higher than I should only cause I loved Gina and thinks she deserve a chance

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Without a doubt, this is the best of all the Mission Impossible movies, including the original. Over the years, the MI franchise had become something of a cartoon of itself. So, it seemed appropriate that Brad Bird should be chosen to helm MI4 Ghost Protocol. As the Oscar winning director of the Incredibles, he made animated cartoons seem very real. Now, he's made Mission Impossible real again. He's injected a fresh breathe of confidence, humor and camaraderie into a series that sorely needed it. He's not only re-invigorated the franchise, he's re-invigorated Tom Cruise's career as an action star. With this movie, Tom is back on top.

You'll notice that there is a lot of the Incredibles in MI4 Ghost Protocol. That's not only because of Brad Bird's influence, but because the Incredibles was a humorous homage to action films. You could say it's the IMF meets the Incredibles. That is not a deterrent. It's a tribute to a director who can think outside the proverbial action box. This isn't the same old, same old. The movie is much more upbeat and doesn't take itself too seriously. Which works to its advantage.

Tom Cruise has never been better. This isn't the brooding Ethan Hunt of previous movies. He's a man on a mission. pardon the pun. To make a complicated story short, the IMF has been shut down and disavowed after a massive explosion at the Kremlin. That explosion is blamed on the IMF. But, it was nothing more than a diversion to steal a nuclear detonator by a terrorist hell bent on ensuring peace on Earth by starting a nuclear war between the super powers. It's up to Ethan, and his cobbled together disavowed team, to hunt down the nuclear terrorist and save the world. simple.

Once you have suspended disbelief, sit back and enjoy. The cast is uniformly excellent. Jeremy Renner plays an IMF analyst suit (with more than desk skills at his disposal) reluctantly recruited into the field. Paula Patton is the former team leader of a mission gone bad sent to rescue Hunt. Simon Pegg is back as Benji, the computer/technology genius. While it may seem like he's there just for comic relief, he is an integral part of the team. There are no dull moments. The movie has a quick pace, fun one liners and mind blowing special effects filmed in glorious IMAX. Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner both have sensational action sequences. Tom Cruise isn't the only actor who gets to jump off buildings. And if this movie is any indication, Jeremy Renner is going to make a fantastic Jason Bourne. This wasn't a vehicle for just Tom. Everyone gets a piece of the action. It's a true throw back to the original TV series.

Contraband

"Contraband" is a 2011 action film starring Mark Wahlberg as a former smuggler reluctantly drawn back into the game for one last score, this time to help his brother-in-law (Caleb Landry Jones) who got in too deep with the bad guys (Giovanni Ribisi).

For the past few years Wahlberg has been cranking out the action films at a pace that truly amazes. He's been nominated twice for an Oscar ("The Fighter" in 2010 and "The Departed" in 2006) and recognized for "Three Kings" (1999), and "Four Brothers" (2005), although my favorite Wahlberg role (and guilty pleasure) "Shooter" (2007) has been ignored on the awards circuit.
